As an eighth grade teacher in a rural community, it is my job to teach students math skills to prepare them for their walk down the yellow brick road toward high school. Many days it is a battle between the ?good witch' lessons (hands on activities that motivate critical thinking) and the ?bad witch' lessons (skill and drill lessons simply involving worksheets). Lack of technology in my classroom hinders many of the ?good witch' lessons relating to graphing. Being able to use technology to take lessons to the next level would greatly benefit my students by keeping them engaged in the learning process. Incorporating technology into any lesson is an important teaching strategy. I feel that in today's world where students have access to computers, ipods, and cell phones, teachers need to grasp student attention any way possible. To grasp my student's attention, I would like to have a set of 15 TI-73 Explorer graphing calculators. Before using these calculators, students will gather information on the height of various types of balls dropped from various heights and graph their information by hand. Once their graphs are created, the same information will then be entered into the graphing calculator. Students will then compare their hand made graphs to graphs created using a graphing calculator. This will allow students to gauge their understanding of graphing information. The use of calculators in my 8th grade math class is an introduction to the use on calculators in their high school career. If students are exposed to this type of technology in middle school, it could help them to be more successful in high school. The school in which I teach is a middle school, which houses 5th through 8th grade. As a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the population of our school has increased due to the fact that we are located approximately 60 miles northwest of New Orleans. The total number of students that would benefit from the use of graphing calculators in my school is approximately 180 8th graders, since the calculators will be rotated through the math department for various lessons that incorporate graphing. Please help my students walk down the yellow brick road without ?bad witch' lessons by helping me to acquire a set of 15 TI-73 Explorer graphing calculators, which will help students to prepare for their high school experiences with math.
