This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an amazing group of K-Grade 2 English Language Learners in a public school in the South Bronx. I support them in their integrated classroom while also pulling them for small group reading instruction. Due to their disrupted education over the past two years many of these students are performing below grade-level and require more support than ever before. Despite these challenges, I find myself more committed to them and their education than ever before. Why? Because it is them - the English Language Learners at PS 277 - who give me a clear purpose when I wake up in the morning. I owe it to them.

My Project

How can you address the diverse learning needs of ALL students in your classroom? Due to COVID learning loss this is a question that more teachers than every before are asking themselves this school year.

Through my experience, the way we can reach our young, diverse learners is through data driven learning centers.

These centers can be completed independently with recording sheets to hold students accountable, thus freeing up the teacher to meet with Guided Literacy Groups. I have worked closely with a literacy consultant at my school to create a new reading prototype that would allow for this type of learning to happen. And it works! The only foreseeable barrier to it's success? The materials. Learning centers can be expensive to buy - and time consuming to make. Unfortunately, time and money being two things that public school teachers don't have enough of!

That is why I have come to Donors Choose with this project - a project that not only includes engaging phonics & sight word activities, whiteboard markers and boards - but also two iPads. These iPads will be used at one learning center, allowing students to connect with a teacher on medical accommodation to receive additional data driven, reading instruction. This is a unique experience that is only possible through this technology.

I believe that if this project is funded I will be able to work across three different English As a New Language Integrated Classrooms to implement learning centers that will meet students where they are - while allowing for myself and the classroom teacher to groups of students and provide data-driven small group instruction. It will only be THEN that we will see COVID learning loss be a thing of the past.
