My Students

Most kids love using computers, and my classes are no different! I see a range of students each day from grades K-5, and they all have one thing in common - they love to learn AND play! Computer science, coding, programming... new fun concepts for our rural school. Many people think these ideas are extremely difficult, only for higher learning adults, and far too hard to teach to children!

Kids can master anything with the right attitude and resources.

Coding and programming are a huge part of my classroom, and though it can indeed be rough to teach, the rewards are incredible. My students will leave my classroom not only understanding basic computer skills such as typing and navigating the internet, but how to build codes, create apps, and direct machines. Can you imagine being 10 years old and having the knowledge at your fingertips to fully program a robot?!

My Project

Teachers go to college to learn. We are encouraged to study hard. We must memorize vocabulary words, build processes, construct lesson plans, and write numerous papers detailing how we came to certain conclusions or why we would not utilize the proposed information in the future. When the degree is completed, teachers set forth into the world to bring to life what was learned during those strenuous years of study. The gratification of seeing your hard work come to life is one of the greatest, most fulfilling emotions a teacher can experience.

Learning to code is a new experience for any age; my students are basically learning how to speak a new language with only colored blocks!

After a few sessions of this language, students may start to wonder what the point of this might be, and how they will use this later on.

One way to bring this learning to life, in a sense, is through robotic programming. Coding a puzzle or doing an online lesson to move a character is fun, but becomes repetitive fairly quickly. Programming a robot in real time is an excellent way to allow students not only how to code, but lets them use creativity, math, and communication to accomplish a task.

One robot that would be useful robot that would be extremely beneficial is the Dash robot. Dash uses Blockly, the same language we are currently learning on Code.org at this time. Dash bots are able to talk, recreate programmed noises, move on command, and even sing. These types of robots are also rechargeable, which will save on the cost of batteries!

Please help me give my kids the best chance at seeing their knowledge come to life through robots.
