My Students

My students use American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary language. Few students have full access to full communication at home, meaning that their time at school is crucial. We have the challenge and responsibility of connecting students and parents who do not necessarily use the same language. With many families that are use Spanish at home, some don't even write the same language.

My students are third and fourth graders at a Title I school in East LA.

They are bused in up to two hours to our school from all over LA in order to provide full support and access in our "Total Communication" program.

Many of my students have had limited access to a fully-accessible first language. This limited access to ASL impacts their language development resulting in delays. They learn best with visual, hands-on lessons that allow them to engage with immediate feedback.

My Project

My students love engaging with technology and learning how to use technology to interact with each other and the world around them. Dash and Dot will provide them with the opportunity to work as a team and communicate to achieve a shared goal.

The immediate nature of feedback that is built into coding with Dash and Dot is a game-changer for student-led learning and independence.

Without the need for adult input, my students will be able to test their theories and make changes to their code to succeed as a team.

Many of my students read below grade level due to limited access to their primary language. The visual cues with the coding sequences will support reading for comprehension. Our class discussions will be supported by my students' enthusiasm for working with the Dash and Dot robots. The support gained from this STEM access will benefit my students in all content areas.
