My Students

My students are a reflection of our community. I teach in a school where 37% identify as white, 34% as Black, 11% Hispanic and 8% Asian; the remainder identify as mixed race or another race.

The Social Studies curriculum should reflect the faces of my students.

By securing a class set of the book Dark Sky Rising, I move closer to that goal.

We serve a large group of students with diverse needs. Over 59% in poverty, and 2% of our students are homeless. 15% of our students are in Special Ed and near 7% are English Language Learners.

My Project

By putting a copy of the book Dark Sky Rising by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. in my students' hands, you will give my kids a chance to see the incredible achievements of African Americans that were made just years after they were considered slaves. This is a time period that students rarely get to explore but is crucial to understanding our history.

I want students to understand that historians come from diverse backgrounds.

It is important they read from successful black authors for fresh perspectives and to see their reflection in successful people of color. My class takes an investigative approach to learning, looking at multiple sources and perspectives. By helping me fund this project, you help my students have a great secondary source in their hands to learn from.
