Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us take our recycling program to a new level by providing resources for our class to challenge each other to upcycle!

Our school is located in a largely immigrant, low-income community.

We are a public K-6 school serving roughly 600 students. Nearly 80% of our students are English learners and 100% qualify for free/reduced rate lunch (low-income indicator). Our amazing students are eager to be the best they can be.

My Project

This project is asking for your help to expand the recycling program. Our class needs different recycling bins to help us sort our recyclable materials in class. With additional containers, we can sort through recyclable materials that can and cannot be used for upcycling projects. Eventually, the materials we collect in our new bins will be the materials we need to challenge our class to use our upcycling creativity to extend our learning about recycling and sustainability. Last year, we were able to take part in an upcycling art project. The most difficult part of the process was bringing our ideas to life. Anticipating this need, we are also requesting glue guns, glue sticks, and tape to be able to adhere materials together to build our creative visions. Lastly, with the goal of promoting sustainability, we are also looking to reward the creativity in upcycling. Our project includes water bottles and tote bags to use as prizes for the most innovative upcycling ideas we'll have.

Currently, our students think of only one aspect of sustainability.

They are aware that we "recycle" certain materials, but have little to no idea what actually happens to the materials they leave in our recycling bin. With this project, students will deepen their ideas about sustainability and our responsibility to the planet by being proactive and upcycling materials they may otherwise never think about again.
