With the help of a dance choreographer my students will reinterpret Dr. Seuss's book, "The Butter Battle", through dance. The story is about two communities with vastly different takes on toast who come to blows when they don't find ways to live with their differences.
Not only will my students use this book as inspiration for their performance, but they will also offer solutions on how others can solve conflict in their own lives.
As first graders they have the curiosity and the creativity to produce something amazing and the dance choreographer is a leader in her field. She is simply amazing at pulling out stunning performances from students! This experience will be one my students remember long after they have finished first grade.
My Project
My students will participate with the dance choreographer as artistic collaborators and use their imagination, dynamic creative movement and a respect for social justice as they create a dance performance for my school and neighborhood community. Bringing the book "The Butter Battle" to life will help my students explore and understand how dance and movement can help bring a community together.
This dance class will allow students a chance to experience creative movement and the excitement of a live performance.
The students' work will also support a school-wide initiative to use restorative practices (positive conflict resolution) in our school community.
