Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing kindergarteners diagnosed with Autism and other developmental disabilities. They are filled with so much energy! They love to sing and dance and run and jump. Some of them have never been to school before. Most of them are non-verbal. Some of them use alternative communication devices, such as iPads to speak, while a few use short sentences to communicate, and some do not yet communicate at all.

What unites them all is their terrific energy and the tremendous joy it brings them to jump and run and dance.

They are a constant flurry of motion and their laughter while in the midst of it makes me smile in reciprocity. Our school is brand new and we still need the supplies that will allow us to use that energy in a productive way; to harness that joyful energy into learning activities and gleeful song and noise into academic success. That is what drives this project.

My Project

The fluorescent tiles will provide fun while dancing; my students will use them to jump from one to another, as start and stop places, and directional points. They will use the CD player as an opportunity to practice language - asking for specific music - and turn taking, by waiting for their turn to request a favorite song. The mat will provide a space for calmer movement and the star patterned light will make magic in our room when we shut off the light to move in time with slower music at the end of the day. The bean bags will give other options than chairs during down time at the end of the day while we listen to quiet music as well as during free reading time.

All of the items will also tie into our academic work as reinforcement for meeting goals, for following directions, and as opportunities to grow my students' verbal language - to ask for highly desired items or activities, like dancing and music.

Most of all, all of these items combined will give my 5 year old students an opportunity to dance, run and jump safely in a new school where we do not yet have that space.
