My Students

How much can you really learn just by sitting still in a chair without moving? Remember how difficult it was as a child? Did you ever wish you could just get up and move in the middle of a boring lecture?

I have a group of students who need to have some physical activity during the day.

They are students who come from every possible walk of life. We have the military dependent child, the day care child, latch-key children and children who live in extreme poverty. Over ninety percent of our students receive free and reduced lunches. They are very bright students, but because of the lack of movement in their lives, they get bored easily and fall asleep in their seats. We are a Title 1 school and each staff and faculty member works hard to ensure that each student gets a chance to learn.

My Project

We start each school morning with an assembly called Wakin' and Shakin'. The purpose of this assembly is to get each student focused on the day ahead, go through our flag salutes, and learn about character and citizenship. As students enter we try to have some sort of line dance for students to get energized for the day ahead. Also, part of their requirements in music includes dance from other cultures other than our own. The materials I have requested will allow my students to have a variety of dances to learn for both purposes.

Research has shown that when a student is tired and has no energy they will not perform to the best of their abilities.

My students proved last year that they enjoy having the chance to get up and move and I want to continue to give them this opportunity to succeed.
