My Students

My students enter the dance space with a smile on their face. They are curious, eager to learn and ready to go. They are collaborative, critical thinkers, who are wonderful movers and shakers. They enjoy the freedom to dance, to learn and to grow.

My Project

As a dance educator in Los Angeles, it is my mission to provide my students with the best dance experience through zoom during this pandemic, and in person when it is safe to do so. As the educational lens is shifting toward focusing on how we can transform our teaching to be more inclusive of all students, especially our minority students, I'm called to teach various cultural dances that focus on rhythm such as the Native American Butterfly Dance, and the South African Gumboot Dance. Through storytelling, creative expression, coding and dance, students will travel through the movement vocabulary gaining an understanding of the metamorphic process as it relates to a caterpillar turning into a butterfly and also to their own personal lives during this unprecedented time. The Butterfly wings will allow them to fully engage in their true expressiveness, as their freedom of movement takes flight.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about directional pathways and use critical thinking skills to plan and collaborate with their peers on how to code the caterpillar, using several attachments they strategize and work together to plan, analyze and predict their journey and final destination.

This coded journey turns into a butterfly dance, which they use movement vocabulary together to create a dance. When they explore step dancing, they will use the Language of Dance and Labanotation to code their choreography, which they will be required to teach to another student. Students will tap into their creativity and critical thinking skills to create their own personal signature step dances.

The Sonos Move system will provide extraordinary sound, which will support the students in understanding how sound travels through the airways into the mind and how it is perceived to elicit a physical response. Music and dance go hand and hand.
