Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"If you can walk, you can dance. If you can talk, you can sing" -- Zimbabwe Proverb // In Ms. P's music classroom, we find the dancer, singer, and creative mind in each child. Students in Pre-K through 5th grade develop expressive, analytical, and social skills through weekly music instruction.

Our public school serves a low-income, high needs population of 450 elementary students in the South Bronx.

Cultural institutions abound in New York City, but our families have limited access to them due to constraints of finances, time, and geography. The school music program exposes our bright and talented children to artistic works and creative experiences unavailable to them in everyday life. Families flood the auditorium on concert dates, and students cherish performance opportunities--they are all still talking about last year's uproariously fun musical months later!

My Project

The more ways we as teachers can engage our students, the better. Movement manipulatives--scarves, ribbon wands, and floor spots--will provide an additional, enriching, and FUN pathway for all students to experience musical material. Imagine a 2nd grader tracing a melody that moves through high and low notes with the brightly colored scarf in her hand. Imagine a 5th grader composing a song for his recorder with floor spots on a giant floor staff for all his class to see and perform. These manipulatives will bring music to life for our students!

Your donations will help my classroom serve the diverse array of learners in our school.

Tactile and kinesthetic learners will express their learning through active motion. Visual learners will make connections through colors and contours. Auditory learners will extend their musical knowledge through alternate modes. You will help us create a more colorful and active classroom where children can learn through play and movement.
