My Students

"I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what it too deep to find for words." - Ruth St. Denis

This is one of the most unique aspects to dance; expression through movement.

This type of self-expression builds confidence, self-esteem and discipline. All of these qualities are highly valued in the work environment as well as in the real world. I love that dance and movement can be such powerful teachers of valuable life skills. My dance team is motivated and they really seek to push themselves to the limits. They have an incredible ability to soak up choreography like a sponge and their group dynamic is very caring and compassionate. My students are eager learners who are diverse both culturally and socio-economically. Our school is a college preparatory charter high school in Southern California with a rigorous curriculum that is high-demanding. Students are expected to rise to the occasion academically despite social and financial obstacles that they may face. Our school is designated low socio-economic status and we are deemed a Title 1 school.

My Project

I would love to have matching tan jazz shoes for my dance team. As it is, they have limited funds for purchasing costumes. Between all of the academic supplies, and other costs that incur throughout high school, dance supplies can be a little lower on the list of priorities. Despite this adversity, I continue to advocate for my students and their needs because their financial disparity should not be a roadblock to looking unified and feeling amazing in front of an audience. They work hard and their hard work deserves recognition. I have several performances already lined up where this fantastic group of young females will wear their jazz shoes and I will be booking more community performances throughout the year so that we can share and give back to our local community.

I have an amazing group of young women whose creativity and self-esteem truly blossom throughout the semester as I have the pleasure of seeing them grow into a wonderful team.
