This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, I see the many challenges my students face both in and out of the classroom. As a teacher in a school with a large population of bilingual learners, I strive to connect all students through the universal language of dance.

This project will provide costumes for students for their Capoeria performance to celebrate Brazilian heritage and culture and by donating to this project you will help make sure they have costumes they need to be able to perform and celebrate Brazilian culture.

In this project, I am asking for grass skirts which are warn when performing the Maculele. The Maculele is an Afro Brazilian dance which is often performed as part of a Capoeira performance. My students have been lucky enough to work with an amazing Capoeria teaching artist to learn the history and performance of Capoeria. I am also asking for storage bins to help store these shirts for future use. Our school has a very large Brazilian student population and through this project we hope to celebrate the wonderful culture and ideals they bring to our school. By donating to this project you will help students have the ability to share their culture on stage.

As a school with a very diverse population we have worked hard providing them a culturally responsive arts education. I have been working with all of my students to provide them with a space to create, express and explore their personal interests and identities. By donating to this project you are helping our school continue to provide the best arts educations for our students!
