Third graders love to dance! In addition, dancing is a core unit in the North Carolina physical education curriculum. I teach a multicultural interdisciplinary unit called "Dance around the World" which integrates researching different cultures and customs, writing reports, designing PowerPoint projects, making cultural art projects, singing international songs, and dancing multicultural traditional dances. In the dance unit the children use paper plate tambourines in class and we borrow tambourines from other schools on the night we perform the dances for the parents and community members. I would like to have enough tambourines for one group of dancers and several rhythm instruments from other countries to enhance the dancing experience. I teach third grade in a rural charter school. Our students are exposed to very little multicultural traditions. Each year that I have taught this unit, the children have participated enthusiastically in all areas, but the dance and music have been the favorite part for most of them and for their parents. In addition we present a short version of the Nutcracker at Christmas, and we need tambourines for one of the Nutcracker dances. We would use international rhythm instruments and tambourines throughout the year in PE, and they would add so much to our performances.
