Daily Lab Supplies Help Us Learn!

My students need materials for our lab room! We constantly run out of paper towels and soap from lab cleanup, tissues from runny noses, and we never have enough markers for students to label their diagrams!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an exceptional group of 8th graders who come from a very diverse group of neighborhoods around New York City. The majority are from Brooklyn, and many are low-income, as is the bulk of our school.

As students go, this particular group is incredibly inquisitive and thoughtful.

For the first time in my career I will be teaching students for a third year in a row, and I could not be more excited. The excitement they showed as they participated in labs, grappled with the "big questions" of each unit, and the dedication they showed to inquiry-based thinking was inspiring to see. Now that we are together for a third time, I am looking for new ways to engage them in learning and keep their interest level up!

My Project

These materials will help our lab run smoothly- and what better way to improve student learning than to have a well-stocked, well-run classroom?

Our classroom is a lab, and running a lab requires a special set of supplies.

I can't count the number of times students have had to run to the restroom to grab extra paper towels to clean up from a spilled sample, or dug around in my colored pencil bag to try to find the correct color to label the body of a Daphnia. The more we can be prepared for lab ahead of time, the better my students' lab experience will be! Half of that preparation falls on my students: to read labs ahead of time, to practice vocabulary so they can use it on-the-go, etc, but half falls on me- to ensure that my room contains all of the resources necessary to complete and accurately represent their lab experiences to allow them to properly reflect on them once the experience is over.

Donations will help students be better able to produce lab reports, decrease their stress level during cleanup, and provide us with an easier, smoother lab experience overall!
