My Students

"Kids who read, succeed!" As the new school year begins, I am excited about literacy. I want students to hunger and thirst for a good book to read like they would tasty fries and a shake. My goal this year is to establish a climate that invites and ignites a passion for reading.

It is the first day of school.

I watch as students kiss their parents, wave bye-bye, and anxiously enter their new fifth grade class. As they share their "All About Me" inventories, I find that most do not fill in the favorite subject box with the word, 'reading', When asked to elaborate, the responses range from, "I can't", to "I'm too slow", to "It's just so boring!" As I probe further, I find that many students have not visited a local library during summer break and several have no books in their homes. Unfortunately, a vast number of the students are from low socioeconomic environments where it appears that reading is not emphasized outside of school. When students were called to the carpet to listen to the animated tales of Anansi the Spider, something magical began to happen. Their eyes lit up as I 'spun' a web of fun, humor, and suspense. Just as I reached the cliffhanger and closed the book their voices all resounded in unison, "Hey, can I check out that book?"

My Project

The Daily 5 is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently. Imagine walking into a classroom where small groups are engaged in meaningful activities. In one corner is a computer center with headphones to listen to stories, read along, and practice fluency & comprehension skills. Another group of students are sitting in the class library on the sofa reading with a partner and using dry erase boards to ask questions from the critical thinking bag. Meanwhile, some students are stretched out on bean bags writing an original masterpiece from the "whatnot" box of items such as my son's size 13 shoe or the conch shell that they love blowing like a trumpet. So where am I you ask? Join me in the Teacher's Corner where you'll find me working with a small group on reading strategies and sparking higher-order thinking through role play, graphic organizers, games, and so much more. Come on in! The door is open!

We are in a tactile world full of technology.

Our students need to touch, feel, and experience learning. With the integration of games, headphones, and colorful boxes full of interesting books from all genres, students will be inspired to read and write without pressure. Eventually, like seeds planted in fertile rich soil they will spring forth as bright flowers eager to blossom and give life to the world.
