My Students

Every day I greet students with a hug and a smile at the door. We start off with "circle" time. Students are able to express their feelings in a circle. This technique helps with the social/emotional aspect of their lives. We engage in rich text that helps with reading, writing, and expressing ideas.

They are students who are products of generational poverty, but every day strive to do their best.

They are children who are always wanting more, and never allow their challenges to prevent them from learning and striving to be all that they can be. My scholars are very outspoken, and enjoy having their voices heard. I call them the "great debaters" because they would rather verbally complete tasks with groups versus independent practices on a worksheet. They all enjoy hands-on learning. They love for their work to be displayed around the school or on bulletin boards. Our school is such a family-oriented environment. Every staff member takes responsibility for each child's well being. It is never "my students" it is always "our students."

My Project

Reading is so fundamental in the lives of us all. My students will soon start their third week of 3rd grade, and are already in love with reading. Many of my scholars are reading below grade level and enjoy the picture books in our classroom library. Each morning they unpack and are eager to finish their morning work so they can engage in a picture book before their day officially starts.

I have noticed that the way the picture books have to be stored in the bins on the shelf make it difficult for students to find the book they want to read.

With a front-facing bookshelf I would easily be able to place some of our classroom favorites on the shelf where they are easily accessible.

Not only would my students benefit from a front-facing bookshelf, but I would benefit from this bookshelf as well. One of my goals for the new school year is to read a picture book to them each day. We have a wall dedicated to this initiative that will display a picture of the book cover. At the the end of the year we want to have 180 plus book covers on our "Daily Epic Reads" wall. I am excited about the new school year and being able to display our classroom reads easier.
