Custom Mini-Sumo Robots!

My students need supplies to build a tethered mini-sumo robot. The main costs are the gearbox and control switches. Students will be responsible for creatively customizing the rest of their robot using scavenged parts.

My Students

My students' life experiences are often limited by their financial situations. "What did you do over break?" is usually answered with "nothing" or "played video games." Having limited experiences leads them to place limits on their futures as well. "What do you want to do after high school?" is often answered with "I'm not sure" or a vague idea like "maybe something with computers."

While my students do not lack the talent or ability to do great things, they often lack the inspiration or confidence to dream big.

The right curriculum can change that. My Introduction to Engineering class, challenges students to reconsider what they are capable of doing. Utilizing hands-on projects with challenging objectives, students in my class must think both technically and creatively. They are given a small taste of what jobs in STEM fields are like, and then they are guided to realize that with hard work they could someday do those jobs.

My students really need tangible, goal-oriented projects. They don't leave enough classes bragging about what they've accomplished. If they can leave my room saying "Look at what I made!" that is a big deal to me, and it's a bigger deal to them.

My Project

Have you ever watched Battle Bots and thought, "It would be cool to do that?!" Well, I know students in my Introduction to Engineering class have. This project will allow my students to create miniature robots that can fight in a sumo-style battle. The goal of their robot will be to push the opposing robot outside the circle. Each robot will be designed around a Tamiya Double Gearbox, which includes two motors and can be configured at four different speed ratios depending on whether the students want a faster or stronger robot. Students will build their own control boards by wiring a battery holder to the motors using two double pull double throw (DPDT) toggle switches, giving them the opportunity to learn about electric circuits and DC motors.

Not only will my students learn about robotics, gear ratios, and electric circuits, they will also be challenged to flex their artistic creativity in an environmentally responsible way!

The student must get creative and build parts of their robots out of scavenged junk, with their final product being graded on both function and aesthetics. Because a well engineered product won't sell if it isn't visually appealing, students will need to view their design through both an engineering and artistic lens. They will be challenged to incorporate the elements and principles of design to create a finished product that is the perfect blend of form and function.

Almost all parts will be able to be reused in subsequent years!
