Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Founded in 2004, my New York City Department of Education public school serves recent immigrants to the United States who are new learners of English. FIHS prepares new students for graduation, college, and work striving to meet the diverse academic and socio-emotional needs of the students. Students arrive at the school with different educational backgrounds and varying degrees of English fluency and my school develops their intellectual, cultural and collaborative abilities so that students may be active members of an interdependent world. Our school utilizes the instructional model of the Internationals Network for Public Schools with project-based learning, heterogeneous classes and with language instruction as a part of all of the content areas. In addition to meeting New York State Regents exam requirements for English and math, students prepare and present six performance-based assessment tasks approved by the The New York Performance Standards Consortium.

All of my students are recent immigrants to the country, our school had not only been teaching them everything from academic content areas to career preparation but we also believe that language learning is enhanced by experiences both in and out of the school building.

Therefore, we have organized numerous learning opportunities for students outside of their classroom settings. This year, I would like to teach an elective class where students get to learn about how to build a computer tower from scratch. This class will introduce students to the concepts of computer and electrical engineering. We will be breaking down and learning about each and every component. We were able to purchase a few parts last year, unfortunately, the majority of parts are not sold with ShopDOE, the portal where NYCDOE schools need to do their shopping. My students need your support to fund this project.
