Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a GT pull out program for elementary students. My children wrote a skit and performed it for the student body with some borrowed puppets. They were hooked.
I teach in a low socioeconomic school district and our school is a haven for many of the children who attend as they live in very poor conditions. Our school does not have extra money to spend on theater arts. When the students performed I saw a transformation. I saw positive role models and I saw heroes. The younger children not only applauded but continued to give feedback to the performers for many days after the play. The students have begged me to find a way so they can start a puppet theater. My students were great and they knew it! I want to continue to work with them and have them perform for the student body and others as an incredible way to enhance the concepts they are learning.
We need puppets,finger puppets, theater books, costumes and props to be successful.
The students want to write and perform. I sense greatness in these students and they just need a chance to express it!
You will make it possible for my students to shine! You will make it possible for my students to read, write and speak better each time the curtain goes up. You will be making a difference in the lives of many students and ensuring that the show goes on!
In the words of one small student: " My teacher said I was a great actor. I am." Help them to believe in themselves like that.
