My Students

Have you ever read 25 books in one year? The students at our high school were challenged to this for the past school year. Some have delved into series such as Twilight, Harry Potter, Bluford books, and Cirque Du Freak, while others have meandered around the library for individual titles.

Our students are not traditionally in love with books.

In fact, 3 years ago our library's circulation statistics showed that only 200 works were checked out. We've steadily improved that to last year's record of almost 2,000! I teach in a poverty-stricken area of the Arkansas Delta, where education has not been a primary concern. Our test scores have suffered, and many of our children do not have strong positive memories with books. We're a 100% free lunch school that is striving to improve our kids' attitudes toward books. Logically, the more books that are checked out, the more reading that occurs. Studies have shown that students who read have higher standardized test scores and academic grades.

My Project

This year we've asked of our students what was previously thought of as impossible: 25 books read. One child in my class has already read 74, yes 74, novels this year. While I've had some students who have embraced this challenge, others need a little more of an incentive to succeed. For each novel that a student has read, we'd like to give them a ticket for a raffle. Some prizes we have had donated from our community, but because we live in a low-income area not many businesses are able to donate big-ticket items. We'd love for YOU to donate these! We're asking for prizes such as DJ Hero to help inspire our kids to read.

Our students have already begun to improve their reading habits and test scores; let's reward them for their hard work!

Please help my school to show these kids that their effort pays off both intrinsically and extrinsically!
