My Students

3rd grade is such an important year- it marks the transition from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’! My 3rd-grade students are bright and inquisitive kids who are eager to learn more about the world around them. In my room, we are voracious readers who are learning to use reading as a way to discover what we want to know. Bringing high-quality resources into my classroom to broaden student perspectives and introduce current events in a student-friendly way is vitally important to me as their teacher.

My Project

Students crave an understanding of the world around them, especially as they reach intermediate elementary. Scholastic News is a safe, engaging way to give students access to current events while aligning instruction to the standards. With the addition of online resources, Scholastic News is a powerful tool for learning! We will use the Scholastic News subscriptions weekly to practice our ‘reading to learn’ skills, as most topics are previously unknown to students. News stories are a great tool to learn and practice highlighting and annotating skills as well, with comprehension checks included in every issue. My students look forward to Scholastic News every week!
