My students are living in a residential facility for a number of reasons and they are cut off from the outside world. They have no idea what is happening “on the outside” (as they would say). Most of my students come from backgrounds where current events were not discussed and they are not aware of the world outside of their hometown.
In Social Studies class this school year, we will begin each day with current events.
My students are getting closer to the age of voting and need to be responsible citizens. I feel like being aware of current events is a step in that direction.
