My school of students are great, fun, loving students who are full of life. These students come from many different backgrounds; foster care, adopted, single parent, grandparent raising, and group homes. A large majority of the students face hunger, lack of proper clothing, and home support.
Our students face struggles that students should not have to go through, but each day they still come to school with smiles on their faces and the eagerness to learn.
We are a Title I school. We are a diverse population with 32% Caucasian, 60% African American and 8% Other. School is the safe place and home for my students. School is where they know they are accepted and wanted.
These magazine subscriptions will give teachers and students the ability discuss and dig in deeper to current events. They will provide a grade-level-appropriate text as a base for the learning. Teachers will then be able to have collaborative discussions about the content, as well as access to relatable videos. This ability will allow teachers to engage students on a deeper learning level.
Students will have their OWN copy of the article to be able to interact, mark up, and engage with: then take home.
With every student able to have their own copy it will create ownership for their learning. Developing ownership of learning is a critical skill in becoming successful student.
After the lessons, students will then be able to take the articles home to share with their families. This will be critical for engaging students learning and connecting learning at home. The students can apply their learning at home, as articles help address global issues such as: recycling, positive outlooks, endangered species, cultural awareness, world events, etc. The articles also encourage students to help be the change and example for positivity within their community. How they, as students, can help! Students become advocates who are eager and excited to help be a solution to global situations while sharing the articles with family.
