Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fourth grade English Language Learners want to become proficient readers and meet the rigorous Common Core standards. One way you can help is by providing Scholastic News, Storyworks, and two Classroom Play sets, some of the best resources I've found to engage my students in reading critically.
My students are a delightful and energetic group of 26 bilingual fourth graders.
Our school is an urban, public elementary school in a terribly underfunded district. We are entering this school year with an ongoing budget crisis that leaves our district's schools with dangerously meager levels of resources. Still, excitement fills the air as teachers and students prepare for a new year together. All native Spanish speakers, students come to our class with anywhere from 0-4 years of English language experience. This makes our classroom a challenging but lively and cooperative place to learn.
My Project
I have wonderful memories of the weekly arrival of Scholastic News when I was in elementary school. One of the best parts was the immediate sense of ownership we gained by getting to write our names on our own individual copies of the news magazine. We then read together about current events, national and international news, and new developments in technology, popular culture, music, art, and more. Last year, thanks to the generous support of family and friends, I was able to give that same experience to my 4th grade students. They engaged with relevant news stories, and their favorite topics included Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, musical robots, edible insects, and the incredible uses of snake venom. I am excited to once again share this experience with my incoming class, with the addition of Storyworks and two sets of reader's theater plays. They will have the opportunity to practice reading at grade level and to develop cross-curricular reading skills using meaningful texts.
Scholastic News is a weekly current events magazine, while Storyworks is a monthly multi-genre magazine that covers one theme from multiple perspectives in each issue.
They are each designed to support the Common Core standards, and come with helpful resources. The Classroom Play sets are also thematic and help to build oral reading confidence. Subscriptions to these magazines and supplements will provide my students with a wide variety of engaging texts to help them grow as thoughtful readers.
