My Students

I teach first grade at a public school located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York. We are a Title I school, and most of the children come from low-income, non-English speaking homes. Many of them come to school just to have food and someone to care about them.

Things we often take for granted are often hard for them to grasp.

I was a second grade teacher for so many years. I decided to come down to first grade, and now I realized I don't have any books for these children to enjoy and start to love reading again. The books I have are too hard, and they are not learning from them. It breaks my heart to see them looking through baskets of books that are difficult for them.

My Project

We need a new library filled with new fun and exciting books. Please help our classroom library! Since I switched grades, my library books that I have are difficult for my first graders. I've asked the school, and I've gotten a few titles. With a class of 32 children, a few titles isn't working.

The books we have are old and ripped and so boring! There is nothing more exciting than jumping into a new book - new book that isn't written in, or pages falling out. Please help us in getting a library we deserve.
