Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to learn and willing to work. They come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system; there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL (English Language Learners) and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn.

My students truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day.

I hope to provide them with even more authentic science experiences within the classroom.

My Project

The Next Generation Science Standards emphasize the importance of exploration and hands-on learning in Science. With these materials, I will be able to create a series of lab-based investigations to help my students learn more about light and sound waves.

Actively exploring light and sound with actual materials is far more meaningful than reading about experiments in a book.

The headphones will help my students listen to and compare different sounds to learn how changing the frequency and pitch changes what you hear. The tuning forks will help my students investigate how changing vibrations changes what we hear. The graduated cylinders will help my students better understand how musical instruments work as they make connections between the amount of water in a cylinder and the pitch that is heard. The colored gels will help my students discover the primary colors of light and make connections between bouncing waves and the colors we see every day.

Your donations will make these and other hands-on experiences a reality for my students this year and in years to come.
