Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love lab work. As we study DNA, I want my students to be able to see DNA. Simple supplies can help my students determine the best methods for extracting DNA and allow them to repeat the experiment with a variety of foods, and even their own saliva!

I teach around ninety 6th grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system, there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

With these supplies, students will be able to conduct inquiry and exploration based labs to extract DNA. Students will first be presented with a variety of supplies, including salt, alcohol, different soaps, and water all presented in front of them. In collaborative groups, will be challenged to find the combination of chemicals and steps that will enable them to extract the most DNA from the strawberries in front of them. By ordering large quantities, I hope students will be able to test several different methods to determine which is the best. Students will use the test tubes and plastic vials to compare the yields. Students will then be able to take their own best method and use it to compare the amounts of DNA they can extract from a variety of foods, and from their own saliva! This process will not only anchor our study of DNA and heredity, but will allow students to think like scientists as they work together to determine a procedure and carry it out.

This project will help my students see that DNA is real!

DNA is often difficult for students because they cannot actually see it. In addition to seeing DNA, my students will be practicing their critical thinking skills and working collaboratively to solve a problem, just as real scientists do.
