Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to my classroom with a wide variety of skills and abilities. To ensure every student is appropriately challenged, students complete some of their coursework at their own pace. Students love working in this "mission-based" format, and I hope to get tools to enrich this program!

I teach around ninety 6th grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system, there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will all enhance my ability to design self-paced missions for my students throughout the year. Headphones will allow students to watch instructional videos during class without disturbing others. By watching videos I create and select, students are presented with content at a pace they can follow. Students are able to pause and take notes whenever they need to. A laminating machine will help me to create reusable materials that will last throughout multiple uses and for years to come. This will allow me to create lasting games for students to play in groups, graphs and images for students to analyze, and vocabulary posters to display in the room. Lastly, storage trays will allow me to organize supplies on the "Grab a Lab" table. This is where students come to gather supplies they need when they are ready to begin a hands-on activity. Totes will make it clear exactly what supplies students need for each activity, making the self-paced model run smoothly.

My students are very enthusiastic about self-paced, mission based learning activities.

Advanced students are completing far more work than before, and students who need extra help do not feel rushed. Headphones, a laminating machine, and organization trays will help me to continue implementing a self-paced learning system in my classroom for years to come.
