Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs) with special needs. Ninety-eight percent of the school population is Hispanic, and the majority of children come from first-generation immigrants. These children have more responsibility at home than the average middle school student. Many of my students sacrifice their childhood and education to take care of their younger siblings after school.

My school is a Title I school, which means we have a high number of children that come from low-income families.

Unfortunately, my children are at an educational disadvantage because often times they come from single-parent homes or homes where there is little academic supervision due to the need to support a family. Despite their many hardships, my students come to school every day happy and excited to learn new things!

My Project

My students are constantly questioning what is going on in the world around them. As a Social Studies teacher, I feel it is important to deliver my students the news in a kid appropriate way!

A classroom subscription to Junior Scholastic magazine will allow me to bring current events into my classroom.

It has age appropriate news stories for kids that build on Social Studies knowledge and English Language Arts skills. The news stories are meaningful and engaging. The colorful maps and pictures make historical events come alive! I am able to make connections to what we are learning in class to the magazine.

The magazine provides opportunities for classroom debates, plays, and projects. In addition, the magazine sparks a child's civic responsibility and encourages them to participate in the world around them! Junior Scholastic would be a wonderful addition to my classroom.
