Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The rock cycle is a dynamic and exciting process. However, without actual rocks and minerals, it will be difficult to engage my students and for them to truly understand the properties we are studying. A hands on experience testing various rocks will make the unit more meaningful.

I teach about 90 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in a urban public school in DC.

The students are curious and love hands on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, really tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences.

My Project

We currently have few supplies for an upcoming rocks and minerals unit. With only a few random rock samples and no testing supplies, the students will not receive the full geology experience that they deserve. With these materials, I would have plenty of rock and mineral samples for the students to study, with a wide variety of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks and the minerals that make them up. The students could see first hand how the types of rocks differ and how there are variations within the categories as well. I am also asking for testing supplies, including HCl, streak plates, magnets, and glass plates. These will allow the students to test the samples for different identifying properties such as streak color, magnetism, and hardness. These supplies would change the unit from one of memorizing facts about rocks to one of discovery, allowing students to run tests on "mystery" rocks and identify them, make predictions, and learn the different properties themselves.

These supplies will make the rock and mineral unit a hands-on experience.

Without them, the students will be studying rocks from black and white pictures and will have to "take my word" on the properties of each one. These supplies will allow them to construct their own knowledge and ask and investigate their own questions. I will be able to create a truly inquiry based unit for them.
