Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The most important, and enjoyable, part of Science class is completing labs. However, a good lab requires a lot of equipment. Without these basic supplies, students will be unable to complete the lab experiments in their groups.

I teach about 90 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in an urban public school in DC.

The students are curious and love hands on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences.

My Project

I am asking for basic lab supplies will be utilized throughout the year and for many years to come. With balances, the chemistry unit will come to life. Students will be able to measure different ratios of solids and liquids in order to see the effects. Students will also learn to be specific and precise in their scientific explorations, citing that they used two grams of baking soda rather than "a little bit". Likewise, graduated cylinders will help my students be precise when measuring different volumes. Without calculators, I currently have to cut out or drastically simplify a lot of the science concepts due to math skills. When calculating ratios I need to ensure everything works out evenly so they can do the math. When creating an authentic lab environment, it is nearly impossible to ensure that things come out perfectly. Having calculators would allow my students to do the math and learn the science.

This project will enhance the scientific nature of my class.

Instead of pre-measuring for the students, I will be able to teach my students the importance of precision and accuracy within an experiment. I will also be able to teach concepts to a higher level and prepare my students for the demands of upper level science classes. By donating, you are not only helping my students now, but students for years to come.
