Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is a huge difference between reading about something and actually doing it. For the upcoming light and sound unit, my students do not even have that textbook resource. I would love to be able to provide them with multiple trade books and hands on materials to bring the unit together.

I teach about 100 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in a urban public school in DC.

The students are curious and love hands on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, really tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences.

My Project

If I obtain these resources, I will be able to create a unit for my students that will incorporate what they already know and tie in new explorations to discover how light and sound work in their daily lives. The students will have access to several trade books explaining at various reading and content levels how sound waves interact. These books will provide free time reading and I will also be able to select assigned readings from them. Some of the situations in the books will spark lively discussions and Socratic seminars. In addition, the hands on materials in the kits and to supplement the kits will solidify the textbook understanding with hands on examples. The students will be able to confirm what they learned about waves as they design, carry out, and share the results of experiments. They will experience the world of light and sound first hand.

Currently, I have no resources to pull together this unit.

Without hands on materials and some books, the unit will be nothing more than myself writing a textbook and encouraging them to take my word for it when it comes to the actual experiments. The unit will be much more meaningful with actual supplies for the students.
