Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is a huge difference between reading about magnets and magnetism and actually seeing the effects of magnetic fields with hands-on explorations. Magnets, iron filings, and viewing papers will allow us to explore the wonders of magnets and will reinforce the concepts we are studying.

I teach about 90 sixth grade students in the District of Columbia.

The students are curious and full of questions about the world around them. They crave hands-on science explorations and need the supplies necessary to have those experiences. I teach a very diverse group of students from across the DC area, including many special needs students and English Language Learners. The hands-on, real life applications are critical for my students to actually understand the Science concepts.

My Project

With the magnets, the students will be able to explore various concepts including repulsion and attraction. The filings and magnetic field viewers will allow the students to see first hand how the magnetic fields come off of the different magnets. This will allow the students to see how "real" these fields are and see what they actually look like and how we can change them. The kits will allow the students to investigate additional topics, including flux and ferromagnetism, enriching the experience of the unit. Understanding these properties early will increase their love for physical science and the fascinating world of magnets. Magnets have so many applications in the modern world and I would love for my students to understand and recognize this fact.

By donating to this project, you are providing my students with a hands-on experience to supplement the textbook experience.

Not only will you increase their interest in the unit but providing more laboratory opportunities, but you are making the unit more concrete for the students, allowing more of them to access and better understand the sometimes elusive concept of magnetism.
