This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Please help me fight childhood obesity. I am a Physical Education teacher at a Pennsylvania urban K-8 public school. This school is located in a lower economic neighborhood with 100% low income and at least 95% of our students receive free lunch. This is a Title One funded school.

This school was built in 2007 to ease overcrowding at another neighborhood school.

The school was supposed to open up with 700 to 750 students, but now has over 950 students. The school opened up in 2007 short of teachers and materials. We opened up with just one class in the gym at a time, but now in September 2010 there are two classes at once. That means I need double the equipment at times to keep 66 students moving and active.

My Project

The main activity of my physical education program is a fitness circuit. We have 11 stations each marked by a cone with a cone cover describing the station. I would like to add another station using these sport resistance bands that come in three different resistance: light, medium and heavy. I also would like to use a group resistance band the requires teamwork and cooperation. They allow me to easily bring strength training into my program. When you pull against resistance bands, depending on the resistance level (they range from low to high), your muscles will work hard to stretch the bands out with every repetition. It's proven to build muscle, tone and strengthen. The benefits of all these items will allow me to get my students exercising in a fun and creative way. It will teach my students that exercising can be fun and that they can do it for a lifetime. This will help stop obesity.

Several studies have proven the health and fitness benefits that resistance band exercises provide to individuals seeking health and wellness.

Aside from physical benefits, some people may experience improved mental health with a rise in self-esteem brought on by a healthier lifestyle. A stronger, toned and healthy body may be just what many need to get a better outlook on life and improve their mental state. Your help is needed.
