I teach English language development to an amazing group of refugee and immigrant students. Many of them had severely interrupted schooling before they got here, so they are not only learning English and all of their school subjects in English, but they are also learning all other academic skills and subjects.
They are eager to learn and deeply appreciative of the opportunities they have here at our school.
My goal is to provide them with every opportunity and resource that they need to be successful in their new home.
My Project
My students are English language learners. They are high school students and need access to books that are at their reading levels. As students develop their English language proficiency, they need to read books and respond to books daily to build their vocabulary, automaticity, and fluency. These books will give students an opportunity to engage in small group discussions about books they are reading together, write about the books they are reading, and build a rich vocabulary that comes from the act of reading.
I chose books that reflect as many of my culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse students as possible.
These novels will give students a chance to both see themselves and to share aspects of their identities with their classmates.
We will read these novels in a couple of formats - small groups with small group discussion and cross-group discussion board posts, and whole class with large-group activities.
