Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My school population is mostly students who speak Spanish and come from countries in Central America and Mexico. Many times the adopted distric curriculum does not address the needs of these students. In addition, the curriculum is out of touch to the reality of these students that they become disinterested in math and school in general. Teachers need to learn how to include culturally responsive strategies in their instruction to help students feel part of the class.
Using practices in which all students are included and are seen as having something to contribute, will create a positive learning environment for them and ultimately help increase the schools test scores.
Professional development around Culturally Responsive strategies and teachings is essential if we are to empower our students by building on their curiosity and honor their strengths.
These two books will help my school's teachers and myself how to work with our students assets and help them connect mathematics with relevant issues in their lives, while maintaining high rigor and supports for all.
