Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are considered a Title I school, and 95% of our students qualify for free lunch. Our school is located in South Central Los Angeles, and we service 60% Latino/Hispanic and 40% African American students.

Recently, there has been an influx of Central Americans that have enrolled, which means we need to provide our students with more language support.

Along with language support, we need to provide students with emotional and social learning tools.

We provide instruction for grades PreK-5th, and our current school population is about 450 students.

My Project

Research shows that a great way to engage students is to use text that mirrors who they are because they are able to connect to the text. Many of the books that we use are reflective of our population, and one of the advantages with distance learning is that you have access to a variety of read alouds. I came across this book Hair Love, and I've used it with my students; it would be great if they could have their own copy of the text because I know they related to the main character.
