Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an 12th English teacher in South Los Angeles. I teach a semester of World Literature and strive to provide my curious students a glimpse of the world around them through culturally relevant and diverse texts.

Though some of my students are reluctant readers, I know that they are immensely capable of engaging with a text and making powerful real-world connections that will inform their perspectives as lifelong learners.

I hope to get everyone's noses into important books that directly reflect the lives of my students, the community around us, and the world at large.

My Project

I am requesting a memoir in graphic novel form entitled, "The Best We Could Do" to use during literature circles during my World Literature course. I plan to do a unit on graphic novels and have small groups choose different novels and do a presentation about theme to the whole class at the end of the unit.

This book will make a difference in students' learning by providing them with options for culturally relevant and diverse texts as they make meaning of the world through literature.

They will lead their own discussions and have opportunities to create their own products to assess their learning.
