My Students

Take a moment to remember all of the struggles you faced in high school - academic, social, personal - and now imagine going through all of that in a language you were not yet fluent in. When I consider this prospect, I am truly inspired by the English Language Learners (ELL) at our school in Brooklyn, New York, who approach school each day with enthusiasm despite this obstacle.

Our ELL program includes students from a dozen different countries, from Haiti to China, Latvia to El Salvador, all of whom bring rich voices and experiences to class each day.

We believe in a truly inclusive environment where language is learned socially, so with the exception of English as a New Language class, our students are working side-by-side with the other 600 students at the school.

Teachers work together to meet their diverse needs so that no ELL student gets lost in the shuffle. Once they know their voices matter to our community, the stories and experiences they contribute to the classroom are invaluable.

My Project

Reading a book as a class is an amazing experience for ESL classes. Children who discover the joy of reading not only do better in school, but also have the world opened up to them.

I believe that giving a student a new book and telling them that it's theirs to keep is a powerful step toward fostering a love of reading.

We will read these novels and memoirs together, and my students will be able to annotate their responses directly into their books. They can take them out of the classroom, reading on the subway, at home, or even on a park bench. They can access all three of these titles in their native languages, or listen along with audio as they read.

I selected books in which my students can see their own lives, language, and experiences reflected. This cultural relevancy is crucial to achieving educational equity for minority youth and recent immigrants.
