Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In our school, we come from all walks of life which means we have diverse cultures, religions, races, ethnicities, and more. As a school community and especially in our classroom, providing opportunities to read texts which reflect our student population and the families in our community is essential.

Students deserve an education that is culturally relevant and where they can see characters like themselves reflected in their reading.

When students can relate to characters and text, it allows for stronger comprehension, more engagement, and excitement in learning. This book Si! Somos Latinos is one that students will be reading in English and Spanish. The short prose are relatable to students from the same backgrounds and upbringings. Additionally, the book includes great history passages which helps students understand historical events and people from various countries. This text is great to help students expand their historical knowledge as well as culturally competency. Lastly, it is a great book to use to learn about identifying theme within a text and pride in ones identity. We are so excited to read this book as a class. When we read this earlier in the year, we utilized a map to pin where individuals in the book came from and their racial history. For the coming year we not only want to document the histories of individuals within the book but also the histories of our students. That is why we need the Fujifilm cameras and extra film. We want to have students be able to take pictures of themselves and include their pictures and their own pins on our class map. That way, they can easily visualize how they connect to the book characters but also so they can see how diverse our class is.
