My Students

This is my first year as a Reading Specialist for grades 3-5 in a Philadelphia Charter School. My students are bright, inquisitive, and hopeful. While the students have had a very tough year due to Covid-19, they remain resilient and are so excited to learn and to improve their reading skills. Due to the challenges of Covid-19, many of my students in grades 3-5 need to build foundational reading skills in phonics, phonemic awareness, and reading fluency. While skill-based instruction is necessary for their success, they also need access to high-quality literature that is relevant to their lives.

My Project

I would like to create a library full of early chapter books that reflect the many identities and experiences of my students. When selecting books, I prioritized books by Black authors and other authors of color. I want my students to work towards tackling grade-level books. Culturally relevant books are essential for building reading comprehension, as students understand more of what they read when they can connect their background knowledge and personal experiences to the characters and events in the story. Additionally, this library will help me build stronger connections between home and school, as students will be able to check out the books to bring home and read with their families.

I want my students to have many opportunities to connect the foundational reading skills we are practicing together to the joy of reading a good book.

Every child deserves to experience the pleasure of seeing aspects of their identity reflected authentically in a book. This experience can be life-changing to a child who has not yet accessed the joy of reading.
