This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a variety of backgrounds. They have a lot of challenges at home and in their life. Our school is in the urban core. I want to provide an environment that fosters a love of learning and a joy to come to school. I want my students to know that you can overcome anything in life by believing in yourself and working hard. I hope to give my students experiences and opportunities in our classroom that supersede their circumstances.
Each of my students has a unique set of challenges and needs to be a successful learner.
They face these challenges as a classroom community. I hope that these challenges bring them closer as both people and learners. A lot of their circumstances I cannot change, but I can give them a classroom full of choice and opportunity. That is why I am asking for books for our library to show them that there is more in our world. These materials will help them to see themselves in books and to be tolerant of other cultures too.
My Project
Having more books that show characters that look like my students will allow them to see that these characters could be them. We will be able to look at people of a variety of colors and backgrounds and study all the great things they accomplished. This project will allow me to incorporate culturally responsive texts into our classroom. My students will be able to read books that show more diverse cultures and people. They will also be able to see that tolerance of others uniqueness is key to making our world a better place. After all no one can ever take away what you read and learn.
