My Students

I currently work in a small school serving a large population of mixed ability students. Many of the students come from low income house holds and face challenges both in and out of the classroom. A large percentage of our population include English language learners as well as students with disabilities. Many students start fourth grade reading well below grade level. Aside from the obstacles face our kids are resilient and eager to learn.

Aside from the challenges the students face they are resilient, and critical thinkers, who come to school each day attempting to put their best foot forward and become the best students and people they can be!

My Project

These books will help build diversity in my classroom as they will allow my students see themselves (and their classmates) in the characters. My classroom library will serve as a safe where students can reflect, explore and learn culture. Each book was chosen to reflect a student group in my class. Through diverse reading experiences students will be more engaged in reading and develop a true love for books and learning.

These culturally relevant books will be used to create book groups where students are able read write and discuss topic that reflect their culture and those of their cassmates.

The goal is to further cultivate the sense of community and understanding in the classroom, while building stronger readers. Students will be able to choose books that interest them for guided reading. As a group we will work together read and reflect on the characters, major themes and build content specificities vocabulary.
