My Project

My students come from dozens of different backgrounds and cultures. They also have a variety of social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs including several students with autism. I envision the students learning in a comfortable environment by giving them the option to sit on the cushions or rug instead of always sitting in a desk. Over the past few years I have found that most incoming 6th graders have no idea about their own culture or much exposure to maps and locations. The world map, poster of the flags of the world and map of the US will be used for each unit throughout the unit to show where the ancient civilizations were located, identify where their families are from and expose them to the world. As we explore the ancient civilizations and their culture, students will be able to make connections to their own culture, share their own experiences and embrace their uniqueness and diversity. The posters on religion will be displayed in the classroom and referenced when we learn about the origins of the major religions. These lessons will also provide opportunities for students to share about their own beliefs and learn about their peers. The growth mindset poster will be referenced daily to be a source of encouragement. The fidget toys will be available to our students with ADHD, ADD, autism and anxiety as a way to help ground them. The white clips will be used to display student work in the hallways and the classroom.
