My Students

Our school brick and mortar building has been closed since mid- March. We are a title 1 urban school with 90 percent of the students receiving free lunch and we are faced with a multitude of diverse challenges even before our doors closed and we went remote. 40 percent of our student population fluctuates in and out of temporary housing. We have been making slow progress with our reading scores but we still have more than half of our students struggling to read and write on grade level.

Our scholars are diverse, curious, and need engaging stories that are relevant and reflective of their lives and the lives they want to live and dream of.

My Project

These books were chosen because they are stories that embrace the diversity and cultures of the students I teach. The project idea is to read aloud and record a culturally diverse library that students can tap into and explore from home.

These recorded read alouds will also be used for morning meeting where we explicitly teach social emotional learning skills, tolerance and understanding.

The library will be virtual and be part of a bigger project other teachers will be a part of by adding their read alouds to. The library will be a bitemoji room with live links to the read alouds. It will be a part of a larger padlet where other teachers will be reading culturally diverse read alouds.
