Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I have been teaching for almost 15 years in a highly impacted Title I school which means many of my students have challenges both in and out of the classroom. These students constantly amaze me with their positive attitudes and desire to learn.
I teach in a Title I school that has about 70% of the students coming from economically disadvantaged homes, and my students are so grateful for all the supplies and extras materials donated.
We are a school with a large concentration of low-income students. This is determined by the number of students enrolled in the free and reduced-price lunch program. A majority come from families who are struggling to put food on the table, let alone provide all the extras kids want and should have.
We will all be so grateful for your help in this project!
My Project
The majority of books on our classroom shelves feature Caucasian protagonists. As a teacher in a school with a large Hispanic population, the novel sets I have chosen reflect the heritage of the majority of my students.
More than ever, students need to be able to see themselves and their experiences reflected in the books they read.
Such books validate a diverse student's experiences as well as offer a new perspective to students with differing ethnicities, religions, and/or socioeconomic status.
Since diverse books can serve both as mirrors and windows of different human emotions and experiences, they offer a powerful opportunity to build community, open dialogue, increase students' empathy, and push back against bias and prejudice.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
