Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 80 lovable, energetic, and charismatic 6th graders at an all girls school. Unfortunately, many are behind grade level in their reading abilities, including reading comprehension and fluency, but I know that with their passion for learning and improving, and with consistent practice, they'll get there!

The first step in helping them to improve their reading level is getting books in their hands that they love, with characters they can relate to.

I teach a diverse number of students from different cultural backgrounds, and who speak a number of different languages at home. I want my students to be able to pick up a book and see someone who looks like them on the cover, someone who's had similar life experiences!

My Project

With your help, I'm hoping to redesign and upgrade our classroom library to highlight culturally responsive materials. In order to better foster a love of learning and literature, it's important that students have access to books that serve both as mirrors of their own lives, and as windows into other cultures and experiences as well.

With your help, we hope to add a number of culturally responsive titles to our collection that will impact not only this year's class, but incoming classes as well.

Additionally, book bins for the shelves will allow us to organize our collection in a way that is more meaningful for students. Our library will have bins for topics such as dealing with grief, stories from immigrant kids, mental health and disabilities, LGBTQ stories, and more!
