Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school focuses on students of high academic needs. We are an elementary Title I school. The students within my school reside in a low, socio-economic environment and deal with various personal issues while simultaneously struggling to fulfill academic obligations. My classes incorporate a diverse ethnic mix of students. Students are of African/Black American, Latin, African, and a mix of other ethnic backgrounds. Classes consist of a small percentage of students on grade level and a very large percentage of below grade level students. Classes include special and general education students. In addition, there is an abundance of students who enroll as English Language Learners on all grade levels. I teach differentiated English Language Arts lessons daily within this diverse learning environment.

This year, I will be teaching literacy through theater arts (live instruction combined with remote learning).

I will also be teaching reading intervention on all grade levels (live and remotely). Theater will expose and allow young students to learn through figurative language, story elements, poetry, stage production, puppetry, music, and dance. They will read, write, listen, and speak through dramatic play which will have a great learning impact on our student's backgrounds.

My Project

This school year we will be returning to school while the world is still full of pain from a global pandemic and at the same time, we are experiencing even more pain relating to the massive amount of racial uprising going on around the world and in our youth’s communities. My goal is to stop youth from growing up repeating the mistakes made by my generation and past generations.

I’d like to be an educator who strategically instills information in the minds of our youth helping build knowledge of cultural awareness through what they see, touch, hear, and feel.

It is important to alert today’s children and awaken them by teaching them about tolerating, recognizing, and nurturing the diverse world they live in.

My plan is to do this by inundating their learning environment with diversified books and adding to their classroom atmosphere visuals such as posters and bulletin boards that are decoratives and have images and colors that reflect the real world. I will implement focused cultural awareness lessons coupled with engaging activities from September to June. The books will fill up our classroom library’s new cultural awareness and diversity section. I am hoping the books will engage them enough and at the same time encourage them to read more and more often. The books I selected tell stories of little brown and black boys and girls that look like them and share their struggles. The books will allow them to mentally travel with characters. They will help them establish relationships and learn tolerance towards others of different races, cultures, and traditions. The stickers and wristbands will serve twofold: as takeaways for reading long and strong and accomplishing reading goals; and will serve as a means to embed cultural awareness and diversity messages within.
