Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 26 eager and excited fourth graders. They all come to school ready to learn, no matter the challenges they face at home. They are a diverse group of students from low-income backgrounds who speak multiple languages, play sports, have different interests and talents, and are excited to gain new knowledge each day.

They are passionate about making a difference in the world through many channels.

My students see how current issues in the world are impacting them, their families, and communities, and they are ready to take charge in having their voices heard. Although they are 9 and 10 years old, they are ready to create change and be social activists.

My Project

In my school, we have six thematic units that we teach throughout the school year. Reading, writing, and social studies are all connected throughout the units which has helped students make connections between subjects. This year I have been adding an additional layer to each year. This layer focuses on making sure multiple cultures and races are represented , as well as sharing perspectives from these lens. This is being implemented through the different texts we are using.

Students should see themselves represented in each unit and this project can help make that come true!

To help support this goal of mine, I am requesting book titles for our unit “Who are we?” This unit focuses on student identity as individuals and as a community. These books would reflect students because the characters and experiences are similar to my students and who they are.

I also am requesting art supplies, so students can have the added enrichment of an art project with each unit. The model clay and painting supplies would be used in our changemaker unit. In this unit, students research changemakers of color and write a biography about them. With the art supplies, they would create a 3D model of their changemaker to display with their project.

The materials being requested would support creating thematic units that are more representative of my students.
